Frank Blas Announces Mary Okada as Gubernatorial Running Mate

Republican Speaker Frank Blas Jr. has officially confirmed that his running mate for the upcoming gubernatorial race will be Mary Okada, the retiring president of Guam Community College. In an interview with the Pacific Daily News on January 20, 2025, Blas announced that the details of their partnership would be revealed during a formal event scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Resort Guam. He has invited the community to attend and engage in discussions regarding their campaign.

Blas, who is currently serving his seventh term as a senator and has a background as a former police officer, is gearing up for a competitive primary season. The Blas-Okada ticket will contend against fellow Republicans Vice Speaker Ada and EJ Calvo during the August primaries. On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio and Sen. Tina Muña-Barnes will compete against Sen. Joe San Agustin and former senator Dwayne San Nicolas.

Mary Okada has made significant contributions to Guam’s educational landscape. She became the first female president and chief executive officer of Guam Community College in June 2007, following a distinguished career in various financial roles at the institution. Her past positions include vice president of financial affairs, controller, and general accounting supervisor.

In addition to her leadership at the college, Okada was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014 to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, further showcasing her commitment to public service. She has also been actively involved in several higher education organizations, advocating for the enhancement of career and technical education across Guam and Micronesia.

As the campaign unfolds, the Blas-Okada ticket will face challenges not only from within their party but also from a robust Democratic opposition. Both sides are preparing for a race that could significantly influence the political landscape of Guam in the years to come.
