MemorialCare Medical Group Wins Joy in Medicine Award for 2025

MemorialCare Medical Group has been awarded the Joy in Medicine™ recognition by the American Medical Association (AMA) for the second consecutive year, distinguishing itself as one of just 18 organizations in California and 109 nationwide. This accolade highlights the organization’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of physician burnout, a pressing concern for nearly half of U.S. doctors, which is linked to increased medical errors and diminished patient satisfaction.

“Physician burnout is one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare today, and addressing it is essential to supporting the clinicians at the forefront of health care delivery,” stated Ghe Rosales-Vong, M.D., co-medical director for physician wellness at MemorialCare Medical Group. He emphasized that this recognition reflects the organization’s ongoing efforts to foster an environment where physicians can thrive while maintaining their well-being.

Recognizing Efforts Against Burnout

The AMA’s Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program employs six rigorous criteria to honor organizations that take significant steps in combating physician burnout and enhancing professional fulfillment. These criteria include evaluating physician well-being using validated tools, demonstrating commitment from executive leadership towards wellness, and providing mental health resources.

In its approach to physician well-being, MemorialCare Medical Group employs comprehensive strategies that include regular wellness assessments and workflow optimization. One notable initiative is the introduction of Abridge, an AI-powered clinical documentation platform that automatically transcribes and organizes patient visit notes. This innovation aims to streamline the documentation process, allowing physicians to dedicate more time to patient care rather than administrative tasks.

The organization has also expanded support programs and created opportunities for teamwork, which helps physicians manage stress effectively. Initiatives such as forming a running team that raises funds for MemorialCare’s Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital not only promote physical health but also foster camaraderie among staff.

Commitment to Physician and Patient Care

“Healthcare is a wonderful field to work in, but often the demands of the industry can be overwhelming,” said Leah Phan, D.O., co-medical director for physician wellness at MemorialCare Medical Group. She noted that by focusing on physician well-being, both within and outside the workplace, the organization helps reconnect physicians with their primary mission of caring for patients.

According to the American Medical Association, burnout rates among U.S. physicians peaked at 62.8% in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. While system-wide improvements have reduced this figure to 45.2% in 2023, it remains significantly higher than the burnout rates of other U.S. workers.

“Joy in Medicine organizations are leading the gains made against the physician burnout crisis and helping clinicians rediscover the deep rewards that come from helping patients,” explained Bobby Mukkamala, M.D., president of the AMA. He recognized that the AMA distinction not only acknowledges the health and well-being of healthcare teams but also emphasizes the importance of a healthy work culture in delivering quality patient care.
