Community Mourns the Passing of John “Jack” Paul Brown at 92

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, in San Pedro, California, surrounded by his family. His life spanned nearly a century, marked by cherished memories, professional achievements, and a deep commitment to his loved ones.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack grew up in San Pedro. His childhood was filled with adventures, from catching tadpoles at Averill Park to selling newspapers to sailors arriving in port. He also made his mark at Helen Grace Chocolates, where he was one of the first employees. During World War II, Jack assisted his father in his role as a Civilian Air Warden, showcasing his early sense of duty and community involvement.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and later St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would take a ferry across the harbor to reach school. A talented athlete, he distinguished himself as a distance runner on his high school track and field team, earning numerous accolades. He continued his passion for running while pursuing a degree in Drafting at college.

Following his education, Jack began his career at Northrop Grumman. He later founded his own business, where he employed many friends and colleagues he had met throughout his journey. This entrepreneurial spirit exemplified his dedication to fostering community and supporting those around him.

In 1969, Jack met his future wife, Rita Cebula. They married on April 17, 1971, and together welcomed their children, Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. The couple was actively involved in their church community, with Rita dedicating 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity. Jack took great joy in family vacations, gardening, and engaging in various hobbies, such as sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting. His unique sense of humor and love for life were evident to all who knew him. Each day began with a cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle, alongside his keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He also leaves behind his sister, Agnes Welsh, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, as well as his parents, Robert and Agnes, and siblings Robert and Phyllis Smith, along with nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

The community will gather to honor Jack’s life during a funeral mass scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Church.
