Great Bend Economic Development has announced a temporary pause in construction on the Great Bend Innovation Center as it seeks to close a significant funding gap necessary to complete the second phase of the project. This multi-million dollar initiative aims to create a hub for entrepreneurship, workforce development, and innovation in central Kansas.
The first phase of the construction is complete, but the organization is currently facing challenges in securing additional funding. Various anticipated grant sources did not materialize following changes in federal policy in early 2025, which redirected or reduced available funding opportunities. Additionally, a recent government shutdown has closed remaining federal grant programs for the year, further complicating the financial landscape.
Despite these hurdles, Great Bend Economic Development remains committed to the project. Executive Director Jason Kuilan stated, “We’ve been diligent in scaling back and implementing cost-saving measures to stretch every dollar.” To manage the financial shortfall, the organization has modified building designs, reduced investments in the innovation kitchen, and adjusted the initial requirements for the fabrication lab. Nonetheless, these measures were insufficient to fully offset losses caused by unexpected federal program cuts and rising construction costs due to tariffs.
Focus on Securing Future Funding
The organization emphasizes its financial stability despite the construction delay. A portion of its operational funding comes from the City of Great Bend, while projects like the Innovation Center rely entirely on external sources, including state and federal grants, private foundations, and investment partners. Kuilan noted that the immediate focus is on securing the remaining funding through established channels, ensuring that the project does not impose a burden on local taxpayers.
Significant funding efforts are already underway, including proceeds from a real estate sale adjacent to the event center and a sizable grant that has been awarded. The Great Bend Innovation Center is envisioned as a cornerstone investment for the region, expected to foster entrepreneurship, job creation, and skills training for decades.
Kuilan expressed confidence that construction will resume once additional funding is secured. “Our community’s vision for innovation and opportunity hasn’t changed. We’re simply ensuring we do it the right way, responsibly and sustainably,” he remarked.
Community Support and Long-Term Goals
The Innovation Center is poised to become a collaborative space where innovators, businesses, and educators can work together to enhance the local economy and expand opportunities across Barton County. Kuilan highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “This project represents the very best of Great Bend’s spirit, collaboration, innovation, and perseverance.”
The continued support from partners and community members underscores a shared belief in the potential of the Innovation Center as a lasting catalyst for growth in the region. Great Bend Economic Development remains dedicated to fostering long-term economic health and quality of life for local families by creating jobs and enhancing workforce education.
Through strategic planning and community collaboration, the organization aims to navigate the current challenges and ensure the successful completion of this vital project.
