James Winefordner, a distinguished scientist and beloved educator, passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 93 in Gainesville, Florida. His remarkable career spanned nearly five decades at the University of Florida, where he shaped the lives of countless students and colleagues through his dedication and expertise.
Throughout his tenure, Winefordner taught undergraduate and graduate courses almost every semester for 49 years. He was instrumental in mentoring 168 PhD students, guiding them through their academic journeys and instilling a passion for analytical chemistry. His leadership was particularly notable during his more than 30 years as head of the university’s analytical division.
Winefordner’s contributions to the field of chemistry were vast and highly regarded. He published over 900 papers and received numerous national and international awards, reflecting his dedication to advancing scientific knowledge.
