James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy, a respected engineer, devoted husband, and Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84, surrounded by family in Redondo Beach, California. His life was marked by a profound commitment to service, family, and exploration, leaving a lasting legacy that will be cherished by those who knew him.
Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He was preceded in death by siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis Sheehy; his children, James and Shannon; his grandson, Matthew; and his brother, Dennis.
A Distinguished Military and Engineering Career
From 1960 to 1966, Jim served with honor in the United States Navy, where he rose to the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His naval career saw him stationed aboard several ships, including the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. The discipline and pride he cultivated during this time remained integral to his character throughout his life.
After completing his military service, Jim embarked on a successful career as an aerospace engineer. His contributions to space exploration and national defense were significant, working with notable organizations such as Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. Among his many projects, he played a pivotal role in the development of the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs, earning respect for his technical expertise.
A Life of Service and Adventure
Outside of his professional achievements, Jim was actively involved in community service as a member of Rotary International for sixteen years. His commitment extended beyond community projects; he was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025. Jim embodied the core principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service, which profoundly impacted his life and those around him.
Travel was another passion that enriched Jim’s life. He explored the world with Alexis by his side, visiting all seven continents, over 103 countries, and more than 500 cities. This adventurous spirit was not dampened by the challenges he faced; after developing a serious back condition in 2012, he adapted by using a walker to maintain his active lifestyle. His determination was evident when he completed the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon using a “sport walker,” eventually finishing five marathons.
Jim Sheehy will be remembered for his intelligence, perseverance, and generosity. His dedication to family and friends, along with his zest for life, has created a legacy that will resonate for generations. He lived fully, traveled widely, served honorably, and loved deeply. His absence will be profoundly felt by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
