A major winter storm is set to impact nearly every state east of the Rocky Mountains, prompting widespread preparations for severe cold, ice, and snow. Alongside these conditions, meteorologist Max Schuster, known on social media as “Max Velocity,” has raised an unusual warning: the risk of trees “exploding” due to extreme cold.
In a viral post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Schuster highlighted an area of heightened risk for “exploding trees” across the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. He noted that temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero on January 21 and 22, 2026.
“Exploding trees are possible in the Midwest and Northern Plains,” Schuster stated, drawing attention to a phenomenon that, while alarming, is based on some scientific principles.
While the concept of trees exploding might seem exaggerated, reputable sources have supported the claim. As temperatures drop rapidly, the moisture and sap inside trees can expand, potentially leading to structural failure.
Understanding Tree Behavior in Extreme Cold
To shed light on this phenomenon, Bill McNee, a forest health specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, spoke with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He explained that such rapid temperature changes can cause “frost cracks” in trees, which may be accompanied by a loud noise akin to a gunshot.
“It’s going to get cold enough that this sap may actually finally freeze,” McNee explained. “When it does that, like ice cubes in your freezer, they expand very quickly. That creates a lot of physical pressure that can lead to frost cracking appearing suddenly, and branches can fall off.”
According to McNee, while these cracks can be significant enough to cause damage, the actual occurrence of trees exploding is extremely rare. He stated, “I’ve never seen the damage of it. From what I have seen and what I read online, it is rare for there just to be so much pressure that is suddenly released inside this tree that it almost does explode.”
