Aaron Rodgers expressed his support for Mike Tomlin following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ disappointing exit from the NFL playoffs. The Steelers faced a significant loss against the Houston Texans, falling 30-6 in a wild card matchup on January 13, 2026. The defeat marked the Steelers’ seventh consecutive playoff loss, raising questions about Tomlin’s future with the team.
During a postgame news conference, Rodgers commented on the scrutiny surrounding Tomlin, saying, “When I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be conversation about whether those guys were on the hot seat.” He criticized the current media landscape, which often leads to hasty judgments about coaches’ positions based on social media and television commentary. He emphasized that the pressure from external sources can sway decisions regarding coaching changes.
Steelers’ Struggles Highlighted
The Steelers finished the season with a 10-8 record and secured the AFC North title, despite ranking low in offensive performance. In their playoff game, the team was out-gained by the Texans, accumulating only 175 total yards compared to Houston’s 408. The Steelers’ rushing game was particularly weak, netting just 63 yards, far below their season average of 103 yards.
The Texans’ defense showcased its dominance, recording four sacks and forcing two turnovers, which resulted in two defensive touchdowns. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 21 of 32 passes for 250 yards, contributing a touchdown and an interception. On the ground, running back Woody Marks rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown, while wide receiver Christian Kirk caught eight passes for 144 yards and another score.
In contrast, Rodgers had a tough outing, completing 17 of 33 passes for 146 yards, accompanied by an interception and a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Texans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins.
Future Uncertain for Tomlin and Rodgers
Despite the disappointment, Tomlin remains under contract through 2026, with a team option for 2027. He acknowledged the frustrations of fans but stated he was focused on the immediate aftermath of the game rather than his future. “I’m not even in that mindset as I sit here,” Tomlin said. “I’m more in the mindset of what transpired in this stadium.” He expressed optimism for the upcoming season, despite the playoff exit.
Rodgers, who will enter free agency this offseason, remains noncommittal about his future. He previously suggested that the 2025 season might be his last in the league. When asked about possibly playing for the Steelers, he declined to provide a definitive answer, stating, “I’m not going to make any emotional decisions.” He reflected on the season, describing it as enjoyable despite the challenges faced.
The Texans’ victory sets them up for a divisional round clash against the top-seeded New England Patriots on Sunday at 3 p.m. EST in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
