Alijah Arenas Faces Challenges in USC Debut Against Northwestern

Alijah Arenas made his highly anticipated debut for the University of Southern California (USC) on January 24, 2024, but struggled to make an impact in a 74-68 loss to Northwestern. This game marked the freshman guard’s return following extensive recovery from a knee injury sustained last summer, a setback that came after he was involved in a serious car crash in April 2023.

In the match against Northwestern, Arenas recorded just eight points, shooting 3-for-15 from the field. His performance included a disappointing 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, and he struggled at the free throw line, converting only two of six attempts. In addition to his scoring, Arenas contributed two rebounds and two assists over 29 minutes of play. The defeat brought USC’s record to 14-5 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten Conference.

Arenas’ journey to this moment has been fraught with challenges. Following his car accident last spring, which resulted in a brief induced coma due to smoke inhalation, he spent six days hospitalized. Although he was ready to return to practice shortly after the accident, he subsequently required surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee, further delaying his debut.

Coach’s Optimism Amidst Struggles

Despite the difficulties faced in his debut, USC head coach Eric Musselman expressed optimism regarding Arenas’ return to the court. “It was great to have him back with the rest of the guys,” Musselman stated after Arenas’ first practice. “He’s got such a great basketball IQ and brings a tremendous amount of energy. It looked like he had been a part of practice for quite some time.”

As a McDonald’s All-American and five-star recruit from Chatsworth High School in California, expectations were high for Arenas. The son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, his return to competitive basketball had been eagerly awaited by fans and teammates alike.

The Trojans will look to regroup and support Arenas as he continues to find his rhythm on the court in the coming games. With the season still ongoing, there is hope that he will improve and contribute significantly to USC’s performance in the Big Ten.
