TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured a narrow 16-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, keeping their hopes alive for the NFC South title. Despite a lackluster performance, the Buccaneers managed to avoid elimination as Baker Mayfield threw a touchdown pass to Cade Otton and Chase McLaughlin kicked three field goals in a rain-soaked encounter.
The Buccaneers, now holding an 8-9 record, need the New Orleans Saints (6-10) to either beat or tie the Atlanta Falcons (7-9) on Sunday to clinch their fifth consecutive NFC South title. If the Falcons win, the Panthers will claim their first division championship since their 15-1 season under coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Cam Newton a decade ago.
Mayfield Reflects on Team’s Resilience
Mayfield praised his team’s defense in an on-field interview with ESPN’s Peter Schrager, stating, “The defense did an incredible job all game. They got a touchdown early off my interception, so we just found a way to win.” This victory marked a crucial moment for the Buccaneers, who had struggled in previous games where Mayfield threw interceptions, holding an 0-8 record in such situations before this matchup.
Despite his ninth interception in the last eight games, Mayfield maintained a positive outlook. “Just stay in it, one play at a time,” he noted. “Sometimes, it’s not going to be pretty.”
The game saw a dramatic finish. After McLaughlin’s 38-yard field goal attempt was blocked with just over five minutes remaining, the Panthers narrowed the gap to 16-14. Rookie quarterback Bryce Young connected with Jalen Coker for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 left in the game.
In the final moments, the Buccaneers extended their drive, allowing them to run down the clock. Carolina regained possession deep in their territory with only 18 seconds remaining, but their last-ditch effort to score ended in a fumble.
Game Highlights and Key Moments
The Buccaneers struck first with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Otton, marking Otton’s first touchdown of the season. After establishing an early 10-0 lead, Tampa Bay faced a quick response from Carolina. Christian Rozeboom intercepted Mayfield, returning it 20 yards to set up an 8-yard touchdown pass from Young to Tommy Tremble, bringing the score to 10-7.
The Buccaneers managed to regain control by halftime, leading 13-7 after McLaughlin successfully kicked a 36-yard field goal following a key interception by Jacob Parrish. The team extended their advantage with a 48-yard field goal from McLaughlin early in the fourth quarter.
Despite the struggles, Mayfield’s leadership and the defense’s efforts enabled Tampa Bay to cling to their playoff aspirations. As the Buccaneers now await the outcome of the Saints versus Falcons game, they remain hopeful for a chance to continue their season.
