The Carson City-Crystal girls basketball team is set to re-enter the varsity competitive scene after a year-long hiatus. Last season’s cancellation due to low player numbers has led to a fresh start for the program, which will now be spearheaded by new head coach Deo Winsor. With an entirely underclassman roster, the team faces a unique set of challenges as they aim to build a competitive squad this season.
Excitement and Challenges Ahead
During a recent practice, freshman Crystal Coon displayed determination as she maneuvered towards the basket in an offensive drill. Coach Winsor expressed optimism about the team’s enthusiasm, stating, “They enjoy playing basketball. That’s a good thing.” He acknowledged, however, that the lack of experience among the players may result in some difficulties. With six freshmen on the roster, the Eagles are preparing to face tough competition.
Senior Cailyn Zemla articulated the team’s eagerness to make an impact this season. “We just want to try and improve the program a lot this year,” she said. Zemla, the only senior on the team, is ready to take on a leadership role, hoping to guide her younger teammates through the challenges that lie ahead.
A New Coaching Era
Winsor, who has a decade of coaching experience at various levels, including junior high basketball and Little League, stepped into the head coach position after being approached by Kaleb Farnham, Principal and Athletic Director at Carson City-Crystal High School. Winsor, who retired from a career in electrical work, was motivated to take the role after coaching younger teams and witnessing the struggles of the girls’ program last season. “I just thought we can’t have this. We have to have some stability for these girls,” he remarked.
The return of four players from last year’s junior varsity squad offers a glimmer of hope for the Eagles. Winsor noted the significance of retaining some experienced players, stating, “There’s definitely going to be some benefits to that.” The returning players, including three sophomores, are expected to help lead and support the younger members of the team.
Coach Winsor is focusing on building a strong team atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of chemistry and collaboration among the players. He believes that fostering a supportive environment will be crucial as the team navigates the ups and downs of the season.
Despite the uncertainties ahead, Winsor maintains realistic expectations for the team’s performance. He prioritizes improvement over victories, saying, “I expect to see improvement throughout the season. That’s all.” The Eagles will be tracking their progress closely, particularly in shooting and other fundamental skills.
As the season progresses, the Eagles are eager to take on their competition, hoping to gain valuable experience and perhaps secure a few wins along the way. Zemla reflected on the mix of nerves and excitement shared among her teammates, indicating that the eagerness to succeed is palpable. “I think that we’re all really nervous, which is to be expected,” she said. “I also think they’re all really excited and want to actually try and do some good things for us this year.”
With their season officially underway, the Carson City-Crystal Eagles are ready to embrace the challenges of restarting their program. The commitment from players and coaching staff alike signals a promising journey ahead, one that aims to not only improve their skills but also to instill a sense of pride in their school and community.
