Elysian Fields Yellowjackets Dominate Como-Pickton Eagles, 45-16

The Elysian Fields Yellowjackets secured a decisive victory over the Como-Pickton Eagles with a score of 45-16, marking their return to playoff success after a five-year drought. This win, achieved on March 15, 2024, not only crowned them bi-district champions but also reignited the excitement among fans in their small community.

Head coach Bo Maines expressed his pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of the win-or-go-home mentality. “It feels amazing. These kids continue to do what we ask them to do at a high level,” he stated. The players responded to this challenge, showcasing remarkable teamwork and determination throughout the game.

Elysian Fields set the tone early, with their defense halting a promising drive from Como-Pickton. Brandon “Nunu” Kennedy was instrumental in this effort, forcing a fumble that shifted momentum back to the Yellowjackets. The offense quickly capitalized, as Kennedy connected with Azavian Boyd for a significant 42-yard gain before scoring a three-yard touchdown to establish a 7-0 lead as the first quarter closed.

The Yellowjackets continued to build their lead, with Kennedy running for a 22-yard touchdown after a 32-yard dash from teammate Alex Simmons. Following a Como-Pickton punt, Kennedy sprinted down the field for a 62-yard touchdown. His two-point conversion pushed the score to 22-0. Kicker Daniel West added a 23-yard field goal before halftime, extending their advantage to 25-0.

In the third quarter, West opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal. Defensive standout Hardeman intercepted a pass from Como-Pickton’s Quincy Goodwin and returned it for a 70-yard touchdown, further widening the gap to 35-0. Although Como-Pickton managed to score on a 22-yard run by Goodwin, Elysian Fields remained dominant, with Kennedy answering back with a 14-yard touchdown run.

The Eagles added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but Kennedy’s sharp passing continued to shine. He found Evan White on a slant route for a 17-yard touchdown, concluding the scoring for the Yellowjackets at 45-16.

Statistically, Kennedy delivered an impressive performance, completing 8 of 10 passes for 103 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also contributed significantly on the ground, accumulating 134 yards on 16 carries. Simmons added 65 yards on 11 attempts, while Boyd and White made vital contributions in the passing game with three receptions for 40 yards and two receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown, respectively.
