Jets Eye Three Promising Quarterbacks After Fields’ Benchings
The New York Jets are facing a significant challenge at the quarterback position following the benching of Justin Fields. After a promising start to the season, Fields struggled dramatically in Week 6, recording a staggering negative 10 net passing yards. His lackluster performance continued into Week 7, leading to a decision to bench him. With Fields not expected to be the long-term solution, the Jets are now turning their focus to the upcoming NFL Draft in 2026 to find a new quarterback.
Top Prospects for the Jets
As the Jets prepare for the draft, attention is narrowing on three standout quarterbacks who could potentially fill the role. Each prospect presents unique strengths and challenges, making the selection process critical for the team’s future.
John Mateer from Oklahoma is one of the players drawing attention. He showed great promise at the start of the season but suffered an early injury that halted his momentum. Since returning, Mateer’s performance has not been as strong, raising concerns among scouts. If he can demonstrate improvement in the latter part of the season, he could still emerge as a top pick, although his recent struggles could lead to a slide down the draft boards.
Another name to watch is Dante Moore from Oregon. Moore has had a standout season, quickly becoming one of the top quarterbacks in college football. His impressive performances have placed him in contention for the No. 1 overall pick. However, he faced a setback against Indiana, where his underwhelming performance contributed to a loss. For Moore to solidify his status as a top draft choice, he will need to deliver consistently strong performances in the coming games.
The Jets’ ideal target, should they secure the top pick, is Fernando Mendoza from Indiana. Mendoza has consistently demonstrated elite talent, earning recognition as the best quarterback in college football this season. His combination of arm strength and playmaking ability positions him as the most attractive option for New York. If the Jets are aiming for a franchise quarterback, Mendoza is likely to be their first choice.
As the season progresses, the Jets will closely monitor the performances of these quarterbacks. With the future of their franchise hanging in the balance, selecting the right player in the NFL Draft will be crucial for revitalizing the team’s prospects.
