NC State Prepares for Key Matchup Against Pitt Panthers
NC State will face the Pitt Panthers on October 28, 2023, in a pivotal matchup as the Wolfpack look to capitalize on a week off. The game will take place in Pittsburgh, where the Panthers, currently boasting a record of 5-2, will present a significant challenge for NC State. The history between these two teams is relatively brief, as Pitt joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2013. Head coaches Dave Doeren of NC State and Pat Narduzzi of Pitt have only met twice since they took over their respective programs over a decade ago.
During their weekly press conference, both coaches expressed mutual respect, highlighting their friendship off the field. Doeren acknowledged the importance of this game, describing it as one of the more winnable contests left on NC State’s schedule. He emphasized the need for his team to remain vigilant against a well-performing opponent.
Doeren commented on the recent quarterback change for Pitt, pointing out the impact of freshman signal-caller Mason Heintschel, who has quickly made a name for himself. “He’s got a big arm,” Doeren noted. “He can run; had a 45-yard touchdown scramble in the first drive of their last game. He’s got great weapons.” This shift in leadership at the quarterback position has reinvigorated the Panthers’ offense, making them a formidable foe.
NC State’s defense will face a unique challenge against Pitt’s offensive style. The Panthers have demonstrated a propensity for fast starts, scoring significantly in the first half of games. Doeren remarked on their up-tempo approach, stating, “They’ve scored a lot of points and are fast starters offensively.” Additionally, he highlighted the threat posed by running back Desmond Reid, who he likened to Wake Forest’s Demond Claiborne, noting that Reid is one of the strongest tailbacks in the ACC.
As for Pitt’s defense, Doeren is aware of the strength of their unit, which has proven tough against the run this season. “They’re very aggressive. They blitz. It’s Pat’s system, and they’re putting guys in the box to stop the run,” he explained. The Panthers employ a strategy that includes what Doeren referred to as “hot pressures,” utilizing a mix of blitzes and man coverage that will test NC State’s offensive line and skill players.
Preparing for this road game, Doeren acknowledged the difficulties that lie ahead. He stated, “It’s going to be a battle, obviously, a road game, and playing against a team that is playing good football.” The Wolfpack will need to rise to the occasion if they hope to secure a victory in Pittsburgh, making this matchup crucial for their season.
As the game approaches, NC State fans are eager to see how the Wolfpack will respond to the challenges presented by the Panthers. For ongoing updates and insights into NC State athletics, followers can connect with the team on social media platforms.
