NFL Teams Make Major Offensive Gains in 2025 Season

The 2025 NFL season showcased significant offensive improvements across several teams, reflecting a trend towards high-powered attacks in modern football. This year, the New England Patriots emerged as the most improved offense, drastically increasing their effectiveness measured by expected points added (EPA) per play. With a marked shift from a lackluster performance in 2024, the Patriots, alongside other contenders, demonstrated how strategic changes and player development can lead to remarkable gains.

Patriots Lead the Charge

The New England Patriots recorded an impressive jump from an EPA per play of -0.095 in 2024 to 0.119 in 2025, a difference of +0.214. Under the leadership of new head coach Mike Vrabel and the guidance of former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the team revitalized its offense. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye played a pivotal role, completing 72.0% of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. His performance earned him an overall PFF grade of 87.4.

The Patriots also bolstered their roster by signing veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs and adding top draft picks, including tackle Will Campbell and running back TreVeyon Henderson. As a result, the Patriots transformed from 26th to 2nd in EPA per play and are now on the cusp of a Super Bowl appearance.

Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears Follow Suit

The Dallas Cowboys also made a significant leap in offensive performance, improving from -0.109 in 2024 to 0.094 in 2025, a change of +0.203. After a challenging season in which quarterback Dak Prescott struggled with injuries, he rebounded in 2025. Prescott completed 67.3% of his passes for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, achieving an 86.9 grade. His chemistry with offseason acquisition George Pickens helped elevate the Cowboys’ offensive game, despite missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

In Chicago, the Bears made strides with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who improved from a difficult rookie season to a more productive 2025. Under new head coach Ben Johnson, Williams completed 58.1% of his passes for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. The Bears’ offensive line, bolstered by free-agent signings, ranked in the top ten for both pass and run blocking. This combination of factors propelled the Bears from 27th to a more respectable position in offensive rankings.

Rams and Colts Experience Notable Ascents

The Los Angeles Rams exemplified a remarkable turnaround, moving from the 15th-best offense in 2024 to first in 2025, with an EPA per play improvement from 0.025 to 0.138 (+0.113). Quarterback Matthew Stafford, alongside standout wide receiver Puka Nacua, formed a formidable connection. Stafford led the league with 46 touchdown passes, while Nacua caught a record 129 passes for 1,715 yards. The Rams’ offensive prowess has them on the brink of a Super Bowl appearance.

Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts saw a surge in their offensive capabilities, improving their EPA from -0.052 to 0.056 (+0.108). After a mixed 2024 season, the Colts brought in free agent Daniel Jones, who revitalized the offense with a completion rate of 68.0% and 19 touchdown passes before succumbing to injury. Despite a late-season slump, the Colts demonstrated potential for a return to competitiveness.

Other Teams Show Improvement

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, and Denver Broncos also made strides in their offensive performances. The Jaguars moved from -0.053 in 2024 to 0.001 in 2025, bolstered by the strong play of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Steelers, despite a mixed bag of performances, improved to 18th in EPA per play, largely thanks to veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Seahawks finished the season with a 14-3 record, with quarterback Sam Darnold leading the offense to a respectable position, while the Broncos experienced a minor improvement, finishing 14th in EPA per play.

As the NFL heads into the March 2026 draft season, teams will continue to focus on enhancing their offensive capabilities, seeking to emulate the success seen in 2025. With emerging talents and strategic decisions shaping the landscape, the upcoming draft will be crucial in determining which teams can maintain or elevate their offensive performance in the coming season.
