New York police are actively seeking a suspect in the shooting of Jets cornerback Kris Boyd, who remains in critical but stable condition following the incident. The shooting occurred early on August 27, 2023, around 2 a.m. ET outside a business located on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue in midtown Manhattan.
Authorities have released surveillance images of a man believed to be connected to the shooting. While a motive is still under investigation, it is unclear whether Boyd was specifically targeted. No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made at this time.
According to reports, Boyd, aged 29, was shot in the abdomen and transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. The New York Post cited law enforcement sources, stating that the shooter fired two shots during a dispute with Boyd that escalated into violence. The suspect fled the scene in a BMW X8 SUV, while a Mercedes-Benz Maybach was also seen leaving the area.
New York Mayor Eric Adams’ office has confirmed Boyd’s identity as the victim. The New York Jets have acknowledged the situation but have refrained from providing additional comments. Boyd’s agent has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
Following the news, Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson expressed his support for Boyd on social media, asking fans to send prayers for his recovery. In a heartfelt message on X, he stated, “Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety.”
Kris Boyd has not participated in any games this season as he was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. After signing with the Jets as a free agent in March 2023, he was expected to contribute significantly to the team’s revamped special teams unit under new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, Boyd sustained his injury during a training camp practice on August 2, 2023, and had to be carted off the field.
Boyd has made a name for himself as a special teams standout during his six NFL seasons, with notable performances primarily with the Houston Texans over the last two seasons. He gained attention during a playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in January, where he celebrated a forced fumble on a kickoff by dramatically removing his helmet and nearly tackling his special teams coach in excitement.
Before his time with the Texans, Boyd spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Texas. In 2023, he signed briefly with the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Texans’ practice squad later that same season.
As the investigation continues, the NYPD urges anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward. The Jets community and fans are rallying in support of Boyd as he fights for his recovery.
