Seahawks’ Sam Darnold Uncertain for Playoff Clash with 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks face uncertainty heading into their playoff matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on October 14, 2023, as quarterback Sam Darnold has been listed as questionable due to an oblique injury. Darnold, who had not appeared on the injury report throughout the week, experienced discomfort during practice and opted to stop his session to prevent aggravating the issue.

Darnold addressed the media, stating, “Just didn’t want to push it. It wasn’t the day to push it. So that was it. Just came inside, got some rehab. I feel like I’ll be ready to go for Saturday.” His status remains a critical factor for the Seahawks as they prepare for the NFC divisional playoff at Lumen Field.

Drew Lock Steps Up if Needed

If Darnold cannot participate, veteran quarterback Drew Lock is expected to take the lead. Lock, who has six years of NFL experience, would be backed by rookie Jalen Millroe from Alabama. Offensive coordinator Mike Macdonald expressed confidence in Lock’s abilities, remarking, “Drew’s been really impressive in OTAs and in training camp and in his role. He’s started a lot of games, 28 games in the league. A lot of confidence in Drew. Brought him here for a reason.”

Lock has seen limited action this season, completing 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards during a win against New Orleans on September 21, 2023. He did not attempt any passes in four other games where he played under significant lead conditions. His previous experience on the field includes a start against the 49ers, where he completed 22 of 31 passes for 269 yards, along with two interceptions and two touchdowns.

49ers Remain Focused on Game Preparation

In response to the news of Darnold’s injury, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stated he was unaware of the situation until addressing the media during the final injury update. “No, not at all,” Shanahan said when asked if Darnold’s condition would alter their preparation for the game. “We wouldn’t change anything the next couple days. I didn’t think too much of it. If that happens, we’ll react accordingly, which would be the same football game.”

Darnold has had a noteworthy season, completing 323 passes out of 477 attempts for a total of 4,048 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His turnover count currently leads the league, having lost six turnovers. In the season opener, he faced a strip sack by Nick Bosa in a narrow 17-13 loss to the 49ers. In a later matchup, Darnold recorded 16 completions on 23 attempts for 150 yards, with no touchdowns in a 13-3 victory for the Seahawks.

As the Seahawks prepare for this crucial playoff encounter, the health of Sam Darnold will be pivotal in determining their strategy against a formidable 49ers team, which has been a consistent rival in the NFC West.
