Staten Island High School Basketball Teams Secure Wins in PSAL Action

ST. GEORGE, N.Y. — In an exciting day for high school basketball, Staten Island teams delivered strong performances in the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) on Saturday, securing significant victories in their respective divisions. Notably, Susan Wagner, MSIT, and Eagle Academy for Young Men all emerged victorious, showcasing their skills on the court.

Susan Wagner Dominates Brooklyn Collegiate

Point guard Chris Albano led the charge for Susan Wagner with an impressive 21 points in a decisive 78-53 victory against Brooklyn Collegiate. The game, held in Sea View, featured a pivotal second quarter where Wagner pulled away after trailing 18-16 at the end of the first period.

The Falcons outscored the Lions 19-7 in that quarter, thanks in part to contributions from Clevi Hoxha, who added 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Charles Gambino, who chipped in 13 points. Wagner improved its overall record to 15-6 and 8-4 in league play. Coach Danny Lanigan praised his team’s performance, noting, “We are sharing the ball as best as we have all season, and it’s been putting our shooters in great position to make shots.”

MSIT and Eagle Academy Also Claim Victories

Meanwhile, the MSIT Seagulls secured a 74-60 win against Norman Thomas, fueled by a career-high 27 points from senior Ray Guerriero. MSIT established a double-digit lead by halftime, with a strong offensive display that included 11 field goals and two three-pointers from Guerriero. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak, bringing their record to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in PSAL play.

Eagle Academy for Young Men also had a strong showing, defeating Washington Irving 78-41. Armani Perez led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Juneek Daniels contributed a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The win improved Eagle SI’s record to 7-13 overall with a 4-8 mark in league play.

In other matchups, St. Peter’s faced Mount St. Michael and fell short, losing 63-51, while New Dorp’s seven-game winning streak ended with a narrow defeat against Percy Sutton, 58-55. New Dorp’s Sergio Batista led his team with 18 points, but strong free-throw shooting by Sutton secured their victory.

The day concluded with Murry Bergtraum edging out Petrides 50-49, and St. John’s Prep overcoming Sea 77-45, as both teams continued to make strides in their respective divisions.
