Terry Smith Takes Charge as Interim Coach for Penn State Football

Terry Smith has stepped into the role of interim head coach for Penn State football following the firing of James Franklin. Smith, who previously served as the cornerbacks coach, is the only current member from Franklin’s original staff dating back to 2014. In a press conference on Monday, Smith expressed his commitment to revitalizing the team’s spirit and performance as they prepare to face Ohio State.

During his address, Smith remarked on the shift in perception among the team and staff. “Now they see me in a different light,” he stated, noting that his elevation to interim head coach has changed how players and staff regard him. Smith aims to bring unity to the locker room, emphasizing the importance of both camaraderie and enjoyment in the game.

Heading into the matchup against Ohio State, where the Nittany Lions are significant 20.5-point underdogs, Smith acknowledged the challenges ahead. “Obviously, no one is giving us a chance,” he said. Despite the odds, he views this as a motivating factor for the team. “We’re going to come out and fight like we did at Iowa. We’re going to fight a little harder,” he added.

Smith’s tenure as interim coach comes during a crucial phase for the Nittany Lions, who have not secured a victory in Columbus since 2011. He has noted that the players have embraced his coaching philosophy, and strong leadership is evident within the locker room. “It’s positive in the sense that I’m still Coach T, I’m the guy that still gets along with everyone,” Smith said. His approach focuses on fostering collaboration and giving players a voice in shaping the team’s narrative.

As he prepares for his new responsibilities, Smith compared his interim role to that of a substitute teacher, underscoring the necessity for clear communication and accountability. Known as a “truth-teller,” he is committed to delivering honest assessments to ensure the team learns from its past. “I would want to know if I was falling short so that I can fix it,” he remarked, emphasizing his dedication to improvement.

To reinforce his coaching strategies, Smith shared a video featuring Urban Meyer, who discussed the responsibilities of an interim coach. Meyer advised his audience, including Billy Gonzales, to prioritize the players’ development and focus on making the most of their remaining opportunities this season. “If we want our next jobs as coaches, we have to coach so that the film shows we’re deserving of our next job,” Smith quoted.

As the season progresses, Smith has five games to solidify his leadership and make a case for his future role in the program. Two of these contests will pit the Nittany Lions against the top-ranked teams in the country. Penn State’s Athletic Director Pat Kraft is conducting a search for the next head coach, and Smith has expressed his desire to be in consideration for a permanent position. “I love Penn State,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to the team.

As the Nittany Lions gear up for their upcoming clash with Ohio State, Smith’s focus remains on leading his team effectively. “I’m grounded in my feet right now, and my job is to lead this team the rest of this season and just worry about beating Ohio State,” he stated.

This pivotal period for Penn State football promises to be a test of resilience and character as they navigate the challenges ahead. Smith’s leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of the program.
