The Titleist GT1 fairway woods have recently garnered significant attention on the PGA Tour, winning multiple titles in a matter of months. Most notably, professional golfer Michael Brennan claimed victory at the Bank of Utah Championship using the GT1 3Tour variant for his 3-wood. This win marks a remarkable achievement for a player who previously held status only on the PGA Tour Americas.
Brennan, just 23 years old, showcased exceptional skill off the tee, gaining over 7.5 shots in that aspect, the highest of any player this season. His success is attributed to his switch to the GT1 3Tour, which he integrated into his bag after consultation with Titleist Tour representative Nick Geyer in Utah. Geyer noted that Brennan preferred the shallower face of the GT1 compared to the GT3, which facilitated better launch conditions from the turf without sacrificing performance off the tee.
The design of the GT1 fairway wood, part of the Titleist “1” metalwood platform, targets higher-handicappers and slower swingers, helping them achieve better launch angles. Featuring an ultralight construction and a deep center of gravity, the club is engineered to elevate the ball effectively. The introduction of adjustable weighting allows players to customize their setup, enhancing the club’s versatility.
According to J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, Titleist’s senior director of club promotions, player feedback during testing indicated that many tour players appreciated the shaping and face height of the GT1. He mentioned that some players required slightly less loft and a lower center of gravity for a stronger ball flight, leading to the development of the GT1 3Tour with its slightly stronger loft and lower CG.
Brennan’s use of the GT1 3Tour was evident in his final round when he drove the green on the 312-yard par-4 14th hole, setting up his final birdie of the week. His victory adds to the growing usage statistics of the GT1 series, which has seen nearly comparable usage to the GT3 and trails just behind the GT2 in Titleist’s fairway wood lineup. Earlier this year, Kurt Kitayama also secured a win at the 3M Open with a GT1 3-wood and 7-wood in his bag.
