USC’s women’s basketball team experienced a disappointing fourth quarter, resulting in a 71-66 defeat against the Oregon Ducks on January 10, 2024. This loss marks the Trojans’ second consecutive defeat, following a challenging game against rival UCLA.
The match began with USC struggling to find its rhythm, missing nine of its first ten shots. After nearly four minutes without a score, the Trojans found their footing. A three-pointer from Malia Samuels ignited a 16-0 run, allowing USC to establish a lead. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth quarter.
As the Ducks rallied, USC’s offense faltered. The Trojans went scoreless for over four minutes, as Oregon capitalized on the opportunity to mount a comeback. During this stretch, USC missed its initial eight shots, allowing Oregon to close the gap and ultimately seize the victory.
Despite the loss, USC had moments of brilliance. With just under five minutes remaining, Londynn Jones hit a critical three-pointer, and freshman Jazzy Davidson contributed a jumper, giving the Trojans a nine-point lead. Unfortunately, those would be the last scores for USC.
Oregon responded with a series of well-executed plays, including a pivotal three-pointer from Ari Long, who scored nine of her eleven points in the final moments. With only 32 seconds left, Oregon called a timeout and strategically set up Long for another three-pointer, sealing the Trojans’ fate.
Kara Dunn was a standout performer for USC, finishing the game with 21 points and nine rebounds. Davidson, although struggling with her shooting, added 14 points along with 13 rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and two steals. The absence of sophomore Kennedy Smith, USC’s top defender, was keenly felt, particularly in the closing moments of the game.
Looking ahead, USC faces a challenging schedule with four more matchups against ranked teams before the end of January. The Trojans will need to regroup quickly to avoid further setbacks as they aim to return to winning form.
As the Galen Center crowd reflected on the game, it was clear that the Trojans have significant adjustments to make. The team’s performance in the fourth quarter highlighted vulnerabilities that will need addressing in the coming games.
