17-Year-Old Hunter Struck and Killed by Lightning in LA

BREAKING: A tragic incident has claimed the life of 17-year-old Colton Gauge Honeycutt, who was struck and killed by lightning while hunting in a tree stand near Bernice, Louisiana on October 18, 2023. The Union Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that emergency responders pronounced Honeycutt dead at the scene shortly after they arrived at approximately 8:30 PM.

Authorities report that thunderstorms rolled through the area just before sunset, leading to this devastating and rare accident. “He perished in a very freakish act of nature,” wrote Honeycutt’s uncle, Craig Honeycutt, on social media. “We are shocked, heartbroken, and saddened by this sudden loss.”

Responding to a call about an “injured person,” police and fire departments were directed to Honeycutt’s tree stand where they discovered the tragic scene. The sheriff’s office stated that investigators are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has left the local community in mourning.

The chances of being struck by lightning are estimated at less than one in a million, but incidents do occur. Between 2006 and 2021, there were 444 reported lightning strikes in the United States, with males being four times more likely to be victims of such strikes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled Florida as the “lightning capital” of the country, witnessing over 2,000 injuries in the last fifty years.

Honeycutt’s uncle has requested prayers for the family during this difficult time, emphasizing the love and support that surrounded Colton throughout his life. “Colton did not have it easy and had his issues, but he was loved,” Craig Honeycutt wrote.

As the investigation continues, local residents are urged to stay vigilant during severe weather conditions, especially when outdoors. The heart-wrenching loss of a young life serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable power of nature.
