BREAKING: The community is mourning the loss of beloved educator Morton Keith Meiers, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 15, 2025, at the age of 90. His impactful legacy as a professor and mentor will be celebrated at services on November 1, 2025, in South Lake Tahoe.

Morton Meiers, known affectionately as “Mort,” was born on March 16, 1935, in Avon, South Dakota. After relocating to Southern California, he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC) before returning to earn his MBA. This pivotal decision fueled his passion for education, leading him to teach business studies at the University of the Redlands and later at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) beginning in 1979.

During his 20-year tenure at LTCC, Mort was instrumental in fostering local entrepreneurship through his work with the Small Business Association. His dedication to education and community left a lasting impression on countless students and families in the area.

Mort’s spirit of adventure resonated throughout his life. He embraced the Lake Tahoe lifestyle, skiing in the winter and sailing during the summer. He taught both of his children, Jim and CJ Meiers, to ski, creating cherished family memories on the slopes. Mort’s love for sailing took him on remarkable journeys, including a solo trip from Long Beach to Hawaii aboard his 27-foot sailboat, the Blue Moon.

The impact of Mort’s life extended beyond his family. He was an active member of the Hope Lutheran Church since 1979, where he participated in various community activities. His funeral service will take place at the church from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM on November 1, followed by a celebration of life at Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Hope Lutheran Church or the Basic Needs Center at Lake Tahoe Community College, honoring Mort’s commitment to education and community support.

Mort is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn; his children, Jim and CJ; his sister, Mary Bayliss; and his stepchildren, Michelle Fullerton and Steve Nagy. He leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and a profound impact on all who knew him.

As the community gathers to celebrate Mort’s remarkable life, his stories of adventure and dedication will surely resonate, reminding everyone of his larger-than-life presence.
