Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood Wins 2025 Leadership Award

BREAKING: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) during its annual conference in Duluth, held from October 15-18, 2023. This recognition highlights his unwavering dedication and significant contributions to the fire service.

The MSFCA honored Sherwood for “going the extra mile to support the fire service” and for his impactful leadership. Under his stewardship, the Bemidji Fire Department has notably enhanced its capacity, morale, and readiness, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.

Eric Bullen, president of MSFCA, praised Sherwood’s commitment to advocating for fire service issues at both state and national levels. “Earlier this year, Chief Sherwood submitted for, and was awarded, a scholarship to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., at no cost,” Bullen stated during the award presentation.

During the event, Bullen emphasized Sherwood’s ability to seamlessly integrate into the legislative committee, advocating for greater Minnesota with impressive knowledge and passion. His leadership was particularly evident during the aftermath of the devastating storm on June 21, where he led his team in addressing a surge in emergency calls.

“Realizing the magnitude of the situation, Chief Sherwood contacted the State Fire Marshal Division and the MSFCA to activate the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan,” Bullen noted. This crucial decision mobilized chief officers and fire resources from across the state, allowing his personnel the necessary time to manage their own personal property losses.

The recognition of Chief Sherwood’s leadership resonates deeply within the Bemidji community. His staff expressed immense pride in having such an exceptional leader at the helm. “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits,” the department’s Facebook post declared.

Chief Sherwood has been a part of the Bemidji Fire Department since 2002, serving as chief since 2021. His vision for accountability, continuous improvement, and community partnerships exemplifies the very essence of leadership and innovation recognized by the MSFCA.

This award not only honors Sherwood’s past efforts but also highlights the ongoing impact of effective fire leadership on public safety. As the Bemidji Fire Department continues to navigate challenges, the community can remain confident in Chief Sherwood’s ability to lead through adversity.
