Big Reuse Launches Urgent Thrift Store in Bushwick by December

BREAKING: Big Reuse has just confirmed plans to open a new 5,000-square-foot thrift store in Bushwick, set to launch by mid-December 2023. This urgent initiative aims to serve the local community with a wide range of sustainable home goods and clothing, reinforcing the nonprofit’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Located at 378 Troutman St., this new store will feature an extensive selection of items, including books, dishes, and other essential homewares. Executive Director Justin Green emphasized the store’s unique approach, stating, “We take in a lot more stuff and a greater variety of stuff than most thrift stores do.” This focus on reuse comes at a time when interest in thrifting is surging across the city.

Bushwick is already known as a hub for thrifting, making it the ideal location for Big Reuse to expand its efforts. Green noted, “There’s so much going in that neighborhood, and lots of thrift stores already. We think it’s a destination for thrift stores and we just wanted to be part of that.”

The nonprofit is renovating the space using reclaimed materials, with plans to build shelves from salvaged scaffolding lumber. This sustainable approach not only enhances the store’s eco-friendly mission but also aligns with Big Reuse’s broader goal of combating climate change through community projects.

While the new location will not offer furniture or building materials like the existing Gowanus store, it will still provide a vital resource for local residents. Green stated, “The team at our Gowanus location has been able to do incredible work keeping materials out of the landfill, and we’re looking forward to bringing this resource to a new neighborhood.”

Big Reuse has previously collaborated on community initiatives in Bushwick, including tree care and composting projects with the Clean Bushwick Initiative and local City Council members Sandy Nurse and Jennifer Gutiérrez. This new thrift store will enhance their ongoing efforts to foster sustainable practices within the community.

As the opening date approaches, residents are encouraged to mark their calendars for this exciting addition to Bushwick’s vibrant thrift scene. The store’s commitment to reuse and community engagement is expected to draw significant local interest and support.
