Bissap Baobab to Close Mission Location on Dec. 28, Seeks New Home

UPDATE: Bissap Baobab, the iconic live music venue at 2243 Mission Street, will close its doors for the last time on December 28, 2023, after an impressive 28 years of operation. Owner Marco Senghor announced this emotional decision via social media, emphasizing that the beloved venue is not finished yet, as they are actively searching for a new location.

“This closure has been incredibly difficult,” Senghor stated. “Sustaining such a large space has become too difficult in these times.” The venue, known for its vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural experiences, has witnessed countless celebrations and gatherings, creating a profound connection with the community.

As part of its farewell, Bissap Baobab will host a community party on December 20. Additionally, they will continue to engage fans with “Baobab Flying Night” events every Saturday at Muddy Waters Coffee & Lounge on Valencia and 16th streets. Senghor expressed his gratitude to the community, stating, “The drums will follow us, and so will the Ceebu Jen,” referring to the traditional Senegalese dish that symbolizes cultural blending.

Bissap Baobab has faced numerous challenges over the years, including a tumultuous transition from its original location on 19th Street and legal battles that put its future at risk. Despite these hurdles, the venue has managed to thrive, offering authentic West African cuisine and lively dance performances that have attracted a diverse crowd.

Senghor’s journey has not been without struggle. In 2018, he faced a legal battle regarding his citizenship, ultimately receiving probation and a fine. After a brief stint operating Little Baobab, he returned to his roots, relocating the restaurant to the larger Mission Street venue in 2022.

However, the new location brought its own issues. The venue faced noise complaints and endured a lengthy licensing process that typically takes 60 days but dragged on for 10 months. Senghor invested $80,000 in soundproofing to comply with local regulations. “To our neighbors, thank you for reminding us that joy sometimes comes with a decibel limit,” the venue stated on Instagram.

Despite these setbacks, the community has remained supportive, and Senghor is optimistic about finding a new home. “We are searching, listening, and trusting that the Universe is already whispering our next address,” he shared.

As Bissap Baobab prepares to close its doors, the call to action for the community is clear: join the farewell party, stay connected through continuing events, and share in the legacy of a venue that has been a cultural cornerstone for nearly three decades.

The search for a new location is underway and is expected to be a community effort as Bissap Baobab strives to find a place where it can continue to celebrate culture and connection. Stay tuned for updates on their journey and future developments.
