URGENT UPDATE: Iconic Black-owned restaurant Everett and Jones Barbecue in Oakland, California, was vandalized early Saturday morning, marking the fifth break-in since 2023. The incident occurred around 4 a.m., when three masked suspects smashed into the restaurant on MacArthur Boulevard, causing extensive damage but leaving empty-handed.
The break-in was captured on surveillance cameras, showing the suspects jumping over the counter and attempting to access the cash register, only to discover it was empty. They fled the scene in a black SUV, leaving behind job applications that were stored inside the cash drawer.
Owner Nena Moore expressed her frustration, stating, “They did more damage than what they got. They didn’t get anything. And it’s frustrating because we can’t sleep at night — it keeps happening.”
The emotional impact of this crime extends beyond the restaurant’s walls. Community members voiced their concerns about the repeated attacks on local businesses. “I just really love this place — I come here a lot,” one loyal customer shared, emphasizing the restaurant’s significance to the community.
Cathy Adams, President of the Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the broader implications of such incidents on small businesses in the area. “Every time you rob somebody, you’re making people not want to stay in business,” she said, illustrating the fear and uncertainty facing entrepreneurs.
The Oakland Police Department responded promptly to the break-in, but as of now, no arrests have been made. The Moore family is urging for increased police patrols and enhanced surveillance measures to safeguard their business and the community they cherish.
Despite these challenges, the family behind Everett and Jones Barbecue remains committed to their roots in Oakland. Nena Moore even extended a message to the thieves: “Yea… get a job. We’re hiring!”
As the community rallies around this beloved establishment, the hope for justice and a safer environment for local businesses continues to grow. The ongoing support from patrons and local organizations exemplifies the resilience of Oakland’s spirit during these trying times.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as authorities work to bring the suspects to justice and ensure the safety of this cherished community cornerstone.
