Camden Hills Wins First State Football Championship in History

UPDATE: Camden Hills has made history by clinching its first-ever state football championship with a resounding 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain. The decisive game took place at Edward Little High School on November 15, 2023, marking a monumental achievement for the Windjammers.

The Windjammers, led by senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm, showcased an electrifying performance, scoring multiple touchdowns and demonstrating incredible teamwork. Schwalm himself was a standout, contributing to a staggering 32 points of the team’s total. “We played with utter heart, grit, and determination today,” said head coach Chris Christie.

This victory comes as a significant milestone for Camden Hills, which has faced challenges in its football program since its inception. The team ended the season with an impressive 10-1 record, while Spruce Mountain concluded its campaign at 8-2.

The Windjammers dominated from the start, leading 8-0 after the first quarter. A series of explosive plays in the second quarter allowed them to expand their lead to 32-12 by halftime. Schwalm’s standout plays included a breathtaking 67-yard touchdown run and multiple touchdown passes to teammate Justin Batty.

“This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old,” said Braden Beveridge, who scored a touchdown and intercepted two passes. The team’s defensive prowess was also evident, forcing five turnovers throughout the game, including interceptions from Beveridge, Jake Perez, and others.

The Windjammers’ journey to this championship was no easy feat. The program has only been fully operational since 2009 and has faced significant challenges, including a canceled season in 2015 due to player safety concerns. However, this victory serves as a testament to their resilience and determination.

As the game progressed, the Windjammers continued to apply pressure, scoring additional touchdowns in the second half. The final score of 52-26 solidified their place in school history. “We didn’t want to let off the gas pedal,” Beveridge added, emphasizing the team’s commitment to finishing strong.

Looking ahead, Coach Christie expressed optimism for the future of Camden Hills football, highlighting the many young players who contributed to this historic win. “The future looks pretty solid for us,” he stated.

Fans of the Windjammers can now look forward to seeing their names proudly displayed on banners in the school gym, marking this significant achievement. Camden Hills has truly etched its name in the annals of school history as the first-ever state football champions.
