UPDATE: Major League Baseball Hall of Famer CC Sabathia and his wife, Amber Sabathia, were just honored with the key to the city of Vallejo, California, during a heartfelt ceremony celebrating their contributions to the community. The event, held on July 23, 2023, also marked the inaugural CC Sabathia Day, recognizing two decades of dedication to Vallejo.
In a touching tribute, city officials revealed that Gateway Drive in North Vallejo will now be known as CC Sabathia Way. This honor comes just months after Sabathia became the first athlete from Vallejo to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, spotlighting his remarkable career and philanthropic efforts through the PitCCh-In Foundation.
During the ceremony, which attracted a crowd of fans and local dignitaries, Sabathia expressed deep gratitude, sharing emotional stories about his childhood hero, Demetrius Davis, who inspired him growing up. “I think about him every single day. I appreciate everyone who had an impact on my life,” Sabathia said, fighting back tears as he honored Davis, who passed away in 2012.
Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce praised the Sabathias, stating, “You always stay rooted and are incredible ambassadors of our community.” The event featured a free baseball clinic for local kids, exemplifying Sabathia’s commitment to giving back.
Local leaders showered the couple with accolades. Josh Ramos, Vallejo High’s Athletic Director, emphasized Sabathia’s lasting legacy. “His impact here has been never-ending,” he stated, highlighting how students learn about his contributions to the community.
The festivities also included resolutions from state officials, including California Assemblymember Lori Wilson, and a special painting of Sabathia presented by the Vallejo High Alumni Association. The community came together to celebrate not just Sabathia’s achievements on the field—where he recorded 251 wins and 3,093 strikeouts—but also his significant impact off the field.
Sabathia’s PitCCh-In Foundation has provided free backpack giveaways and baseball camps annually, making a profound difference in the lives of Vallejo youth. “What they do for this community is unheard of,” said local resident Jomar Connors, acknowledging the couple’s genuine dedication to helping others.
As the event unfolded, Sabathia reflected on his roots in Vallejo and his deep connection to the community. “I always go back to my house in the crest. My aunt usually cooks for me,” he shared. The ongoing support and love from Vallejo remain central to his identity, even as he resides in New York with his family.
With this heartfelt celebration, the legacy of CC Sabathia continues to inspire future generations, reminding everyone of the power of community and the importance of giving back. As the day concluded, Sabathia emphasized, “I think it’s always important to do this in the community,” underscoring his lifelong commitment to uplifting Vallejo’s youth.
