Chandra X-ray Observatory’s Catalog Surpasses 1.3 Million Detections

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has achieved a significant milestone, expanding its catalog to include over 1.3 million individual detections across the sky. This achievement is encapsulated in the latest version of the Chandra Source Catalog (CSC), which now contains more than 400,000 unique compact and extended sources. The CSC is a compilation of X-ray data collected until the end of 2020, providing a unique resource for astronomers worldwide.

The Chandra Source Catalog serves as an essential tool for researchers, enabling them to combine X-ray data with observations from other telescopes, including NASA’s James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes. This integration opens new avenues for understanding the cosmos, as scientists can analyze X-ray energies and precise spatial positions alongside data from various wavelengths.

Insights from the Galactic Center

One illustration of the catalog’s richness is a newly released image of the Galactic Center, which is home to the supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A*. This image, covering approximately 60 light-years, reveals over 3,300 individual X-ray sources detected by Chandra. The image is the culmination of 86 observations, representing over three million seconds of observation time.

In addition to the visual data, a recently produced sonification transforms astronomical data into sound, representing 22 years of Chandra observations. This innovative approach allows users to experience the sky through auditory means. The sonification visualizes the core of the Milky Way at the center, with the Galactic plane displayed horizontally. Each detection is represented by a circle, with the size of the circle corresponding to the number of detections in that location over time.

Continuing Contributions to Astronomy

The Chandra X-ray Observatory continues its mission, with the catalog reflecting observations made up to 2021. The text in the sonification video transitions to “… and beyond,” highlighting that Chandra is still operational and collecting new data. As this telescope progresses, it further enriches our understanding of the universe.

Researchers and the public can access the most recent version of the Chandra Source Catalog at the Chandra X-ray Center’s website. This extensive resource not only showcases the vast potential of X-ray astronomy but also exemplifies NASA’s commitment to advancing our knowledge of the cosmos.
