UPDATE: This Saturday, the 42nd El Tour de Tucson will kick off at 7:00 AM from the Tucson Convention Center, celebrating the legacy of cycling icon Ralph Phillips. With nearly 11,000 riders expected this year, a record surge from 10,000 last November, the event promises to be a highlight for the cycling community and Tucson residents alike.
Phillips, who first participated in El Tour back in 1985, has been instrumental in shaping this premier cycling event. He is being honored as the Designated Honoree for his tireless dedication to the sport and the community. “I’m very humbled… I really appreciate it,” Phillips expressed, highlighting the emotional significance of this recognition.
From humble beginnings in 1983, when only 185 riders participated and raised $4,500 for local charities, El Tour has grown into a major fundraising event, amassing nearly $130 million for various causes over the years. Phillips, known for founding Fair Wheels Bikes, played a pivotal role in mapping out the current 102-mile route, carefully avoiding hazards like water crossings and heavy traffic.
As the event draws near, Phillips reflects on the evolution of El Tour. “We have people from around the world, pro riders coming in here in the winter to train,” he noted, emphasizing Tucson’s growing reputation as a cycling hub. The anticipation builds not just for the race but also for the future of cycling in Tucson, especially with the opening of the new Tucson Velodrome, a project Phillips has championed for decades. “We’ve been trying to get one in for 50 years… I’m glad they did it in my lifetime,” he added.
Fellow broadcaster Allen ‘Big Al’ Kath, who has partnered with Phillips for nearly 20 years to cover El Tour on the radio, praised Phillips, calling him “my John Madden.” This partnership has become a beloved part of the event’s tradition, further highlighting the community’s connection to both the race and its legends.
As excitement builds for Saturday’s ride, participants and spectators alike can look forward to honoring Phillips’ contributions to cycling in Tucson. With a record number of riders and a legacy of dedication, El Tour de Tucson is set to be an unforgettable experience.
