URGENT UPDATE: The Elder High School football team has just wrapped up an undefeated regular season, finishing with a commanding 35-7 victory over visiting De La Salle from Warren, Michigan, on Friday night. This remarkable win not only secures their spot as the No. 1 seed in Division I, Region 4, but also marks a historic milestone as the 400th win at their home field, The Pit.
This victory is especially significant for the Panthers, who celebrate their first 10-0 record since 1991 and the fourth such season in the program’s history. “It’s just been unbelievable,” said Elder head coach Doug Ramsey. “I love this team. These guys are about the team.” The pride of Elder is palpable, as the team stands ready to make a mark in the upcoming postseason.
Tonight’s victory signifies not just a perfect regular season but also an impressive achievement in the context of their competitive league. “It is a great accomplishment given our league and strength of schedule,” remarked Elder’s athletic director Kevin Espelage. “Credit to the coaches keeping these kids focused on playing one game at a time.” The Panthers will enjoy a bye on October 31 before kicking off the playoffs on November 7.
The team’s performance this season has been nothing short of spectacular. Senior running back Tommy Becker led the charge against De La Salle with 131 yards and four touchdowns on just 17 carries. Junior quarterback Kaden Estep contributed significantly, completing 8 of 13 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Brody Turner stood out with a game-high 10 tackles, while senior linebacker Derek Uran added six tackles and a crucial fumble recovery.
This year’s achievement also places Elder as the first 10-0 team in the Greater Catholic League South division since 2007, a season when St. Xavier went on to win the Division I state title. As the excitement builds, the Panthers are set to host a playoff game, which players are eagerly anticipating. “Tonight is extra special for these seniors and all these players,” Espelage stated. “If you asked every player tonight what this means, they are most excited about the next home game, a home playoff game.”
As the Ohio High School Athletic Association regular season concludes tomorrow, the playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday. With 708 schools participating in 11-person football this season, the stakes are high, and the Elder Panthers are poised to make an impact.
Stay tuned for further updates as Elder prepares for their postseason journey!
