Evacuees Return to Guantanamo Bay After Hurricane Melissa Impact

UPDATE: Evacuees from Guantanamo Bay are returning home today after being sheltered at NAS Pensacola due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Melissa. The storm caused significant destruction, prompting a swift evacuation ordered by Navy officials in late October.

The evacuation was executed efficiently, with NAS Pensacola providing critical support, including food, clothing, and necessary assistance. Command Master Chief Kenneth Nixon praised the response, stating, “From the onset of us receiving the order to execute, we were out the door… they took very good care of us.”

As the storm left a trail of damage, evacuees were transported to NAS Pensacola to ensure their safety. Over the past three weeks, the community and organizations like the American Red Cross and the United Services Organization joined forces to support the evacuees. They set up an Emergency Family Assistance Center that provided essential resources and a warm welcome to those affected.

“It’s truly about sailors taking care of sailors,” said Nixon, expressing deep gratitude for the overwhelming support from NAS Pensacola and the local community. He highlighted the generosity of local residents who donated meals, pet food, and other supplies, making the evacuees feel at home during a challenging time.

Now, with repairs underway at Guantanamo Bay, evacuees are being allowed to return to their families and homes. Captain Chandra ‘Mamassan’ Newman, Naval Air Station Commanding Officer, emphasized the community’s exceptional support: “Our community has been nothing short of spectacular supporting these Guantanamo families… it’s really good to send them home to their loved ones.”

As the last of the evacuees make their way back, repairs continue on the island, ensuring a safe environment for all residents. The community’s swift response and solidarity demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity, making this a crucial moment for all involved.
