UPDATE: Family members of basketball legend Bill Walton have just announced urgent proposals to honor his legacy in his hometown of La Mesa and the nearby city of San Diego. This announcement comes on what would have been Walton’s 73rd birthday, marking a significant moment for fans and residents alike.
The proposals, presented by activist Shane Harris, include renaming a portion of Park Boulevard—a route Walton often cycled along the edge of Balboa Park—to “Honorary Bill Walton Way.” Additionally, there is a plan for La Mesa to expand Walton’s 2003 Walk of Fame display and establish a “Bill Walton Square” near Helix High School, where his basketball journey began.
Walton’s wife, Lori Walton, expressed deep gratitude during a gathering on Zoo Drive, saying, “Bill gave so much of himself to this city because it gave so much to him. Our family is humbled and deeply moved by this outpouring of love.”
Born on November 5, 1952, in La Mesa, Walton led the Helix Highlanders to two San Diego Section championships before achieving greatness at UCLA, where he was named Player of the Year in each of his three varsity seasons. He was the first overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft, selected by the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite injury setbacks, he led Portland to victory in the 1977 NBA Championship and earned the Finals MVP title.
Walton played for the San Diego Clippers from 1979 to 1985 and later joined the Boston Celtics to secure another championship. After retiring, he became an acclaimed broadcaster, winning an Emmy and being recognized as one of the top 50 sports broadcasters of all time.
During the announcement, sports broadcaster Ted Leitner praised Walton’s unmatched character, stating, “Bill was a force of nature. His love for people, for this city, and for life itself was unmatched.”
Harris noted the deep connection Walton had with San Diego, saying, “Bill didn’t just live in San Diego – he belonged to it. Now, this city will forever belong to him.”
La Mesa officials have confirmed they will discuss the proposal to honor Walton at an upcoming city council meeting. Meanwhile, San Diego councilmembers Sean Elo-Rivera and Stephen Whitburn have indicated support for the initiative.
This tribute not only acknowledges Walton’s incredible contributions to sports but also his profound impact on the community. With these proposals gaining momentum, fans and residents are rallying together to ensure that Walton’s legacy endures in the city he loved.
