Garland Mourns Loss of Longtime Commissioner S.J. Smith, 81

Smith’s commitment to Garland was evident throughout his tenure as a commissioner, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the town’s infrastructure and public services. His niece, Mary Smith, described him as possessing a “heart of gold” and highlighted his unwavering work ethic. “He never stopped trying to do whatever needed to be done,” she said. “If everyone had a heart like his, we wouldn’t have so many problems in the world.”

During his final meeting in 2020, Smith reflected on his profound connection to Garland, stating, “I appreciate being part of this town where I was born and raised.” His words resonated deeply with residents, emphasizing his lifelong dedication.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Commissioner S.J. Smith,” said Mayor Austin Brown. “His 40 years of dedicated service to the town of Garland leave a lasting legacy of leadership, integrity, and compassion.”

Longtime colleague Mayor Pro Tem Ralph Smith Jr. expressed similar sentiments, noting Smith’s enduring legacy on the town board. “S.J. was a dedicated and faithful member of the Garland town board for 30 years. He will be missed by those that had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.

Beyond his role in local government, Smith was also a founding member and president of the South River Hunting Club, where he served for over 40 years. Friends and family remember him not only for his civic contributions but also for his humility and generosity.

Commissioner S.J. Smith is survived by his siblings, Ellen Gray Smith Strickland, Charles Herman Smith, and Garry Wayne Smith, along with numerous nieces and nephews who admired his guidance and example. He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and three sisters.

As the community reflects on Smith’s lifetime of service, his legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on their hometown.
