BREAKING: Hudson’s OHSAA field hockey playoff journey ended abruptly on Thursday, October 26, 2023, as they were defeated by Upper Arlington with a final score of 3-0 in the state semifinals held in Worthington, Ohio. This marks Hudson’s first semifinal appearance since 2020 and leaves the Explorers one game shy of the coveted state championship.
Head coach Louise Knox expressed immense pride in her team’s performance throughout the season. “The girls showed incredible fight and grit. Getting here took hard work and determination, and they earned every win,” Knox stated. The Explorers’ season was a testament to their dedication, with many players working hard since middle school.
As the game unfolded, Hudson struggled to penetrate Upper Arlington’s defense, though they created scoring opportunities that ultimately went unconverted. In the first quarter, Hudson controlled the ball and earned two penalty corners, but senior midfielder Maddie Mormino‘s setup to senior forward Evie Martinez was saved. Despite their efforts, Upper Arlington took the lead with a penalty corner goal at 7:26 remaining in the first quarter, making it 1-0.
Upper Arlington continued to dominate, capitalizing on Hudson’s defensive lapses. A second goal was scored shortly after, extending their lead to 2-0 in the second quarter. Hudson’s junior goalie Casey Curry made critical saves but couldn’t stop the relentless Golden Bears.
Despite Hudson’s persistent attempts in the second half, including two near misses from junior forward Anna Charriere, who hit the post, they could not find the back of the net. Knox remarked, “We had multiple opportunities on offense but could not finish. They left everything out on the field, and that is all I can ask.”
Upper Arlington sealed their victory with a third goal in the final seconds, solidifying a decisive win. This defeat concludes Hudson’s strong season, which included two playoff victories and an overall record of 16-5.
Knox reflected on the team’s growth, saying, “We graduated 10 seniors last year, so we had a young core coming in. They worked hard, learned from every practice, and embraced the competition.” The Hudson community, known for its decades-long support for the field hockey program, played a significant role in the team’s journey.
As the Explorers look to the future, they carry with them the lessons learned and the legacy built this season. The support from alumni and the community highlights why Hudson field hockey remains a cherished program, ensuring these young athletes will be remembered for their tenacity and teamwork.
Hudson’s field hockey program will now focus on rebuilding and preparing for next season, aiming to return to the state semifinals and beyond.
