UPDATE: In a remarkable turn of events, Ron Dailey has been rescued after surviving 18 days alone in the rugged mountains of Fresno County, California. The hunter, who went missing on October 13, 2023, recounts how faith, resourcefulness, and sheer determination kept him alive against all odds.
Dailey, who initially set out on what he believed to be a familiar hunting route, found himself stranded after taking a wrong turn onto an off-roading trail. “I wasn’t lost, but I needed to be found,” he stated in a recent interview with Fresno County Sheriff’s spokesperson, Tony Botti. After confirming his direction around noon, he made a critical error that led to his predicament.
As the weather worsened, Dailey faced a dire situation. “By the fourth day, the snow had melted, but when I tried to move, I cracked my oil pan,” he revealed. Undeterred, he used a hose to patch it up, showcasing his ingenuity as he navigated through treacherous terrain he dubbed “the Gauntlet.”
With no food for five days and temperatures plummeting, Dailey relied on his survival skills and items from his backpack. He creatively fashioned makeshift clothing from gloves and towels and utilized an emergency blanket to signal for help. “I tied it on top of my truck to reflect the sun, hoping someone would see me,” he explained.
Despite his efforts, no one came. By November 1, Dailey had exhausted his options. “I told the Lord, ‘Deer season’s ending on Sunday. There’s going to be a ton of people up here,'” he recalled, praying for guidance on whether to stay or attempt to find help.
The next morning, as he began his trek, he was filled with uncertainty. After walking for nearly 12 hours, he faced another choice: start a fire or continue searching for rescue. Just then, he looked up and saw headlights approaching. “I go, ‘Oh my God.’ Instant answer, Lord,” he said, relief washing over him as three hunters found him.
Dailey’s emotional journey included sending messages to his family, fearing he would never return. “I messaged my kids, apologizing that grandpa probably wouldn’t be there for the rest of your lives,” he shared, reflecting on the darkest moments he faced.
Despite losing 25 pounds and enduring extreme conditions, Dailey’s faith never wavered. Now back home, he plans to start physical therapy and sees a psychiatrist to cope with the experience. Most importantly, he has made a life-altering decision regarding his future as a hunter. “I told my wife, ‘I’m done hunting. I promised God I won’t shoot no more of his creatures,'” he declared.
As the community breathes a sigh of relief at Dailey’s safe return, his incredible story serves as a testament to human resilience and the power of hope. Authorities urge outdoor enthusiasts to take extra precautions when venturing into the wilderness, highlighting the vital importance of preparation and communication in ensuring safety.
