UPDATE: Jack Allen Samuelson, a cherished figure in the Santa Cruz community, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by family at his beloved home overlooking Santa Cruz, his death marks the end of a remarkable life that spanned nearly a century.
Samuelson, born on January 14, 1934, was a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz, known for his adventurous spirit and deep community ties. He was the son of Swedish immigrants Melvin and Bertha Samuelson and grew up just blocks from his birthplace at the Old Dominican Hospital.
Samuelson’s legacy includes a distinguished career at Lockheed Missiles & Space, where he worked for over 35 years. He joined the US Army in 1954, serving in Puerto Rico before returning to earn his degree from San Jose State University under the GI Bill. His marriage to high school sweetheart Sallie Johnstone began a family that would see the birth of two children, Julie and Mark.
A life dedicated to community involvement, Samuelson was an active member of the Santa Cruz Elks and the Santa Cruz Native Sons. He contributed to various local organizations and made an impact as a volunteer for the Santa Cruz Civil Service Commission. His passion for sports was evident as he coached his grandsons’ Little League teams, embodying the supportive “Papa Jack” persona that endeared him to family and friends alike.
Jack was also known for his love of golf, which he pursued passionately throughout his life. From caddying at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Course to becoming a local legend at Delaveaga Golf Course, his enthusiasm for the game inspired his grandsons to follow in his footsteps.
In addition to golf, Samuelson had a zest for adventure, engaging in activities such as racecar driving at Laguna Seca Raceway and diving for abalone off the California coast. His culinary tastes were equally adventurous, introducing his children to gourmet seafood dishes that became family traditions.
Jack is survived by his two children, Julie Walls and Mark Samuelson, along with stepsons Steve and John Firestone, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. His family has expressed deep gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Chris Bernardi and the Hospice of Santa Cruz County team, emphasizing the importance of community support during his final months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Santa Cruz County in Jack’s memory. A private celebration of his life is scheduled for Spring 2026, where family and friends will gather to honor his legacy and the profound impact he had on those around him.
This developing story reflects the loss of a beloved community member whose life was marked by kindness, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to family and friends. As tributes pour in, Samuelson’s spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who knew him, ensuring his memory lives on in the heart of Santa Cruz.
