UPDATE: James Donald “Jim” Early, a cherished community leader and educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on December 18, 2025, in Waterford, New York. His legacy of kindness and service has left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Born on July 3, Jim celebrated his birthday with the spirit of Independence Day, bringing joy to family and friends. He was the third of five children to the late Joseph A. Early, Esq., and Loretto Powers Early. Jim is survived by his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
In June 1967, Jim married Helen K. Clark, and they raised five daughters together. Tragically, their daughter Mary Ellen Early preceded him in death on June 26, 2025. He is lovingly remembered by surviving daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, along with nine cherished grandchildren.
Jim’s educational journey began in Schenectady, where he graduated from St. John the Evangelist Grammar School and St. Joseph’s High School in 1955. He initially entered the seminary but redirected his path into a fulfilling career in education. He served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls before dedicating over three decades to teaching English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in December 1999.
In addition to his educational contributions, Jim was a dedicated public servant. He held the position of Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade and worked as a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with Realty USA. His commitment to community service extended to the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for an impressive 57 years.
Jim was not only a volunteer firefighter but also a passionate church musician. His talent as a pipe organist was showcased at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy, where he played for many years. He was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus, Council 237 in Waterford, and the Waterford Lions Club.
Following a decline in health, Jim received loving care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of many who admired his unwavering service and dedication to family, faith, and community.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, located at 133 Broad St., Waterford, followed by a mass at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will occur at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford. Family and friends are invited to visit the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.
