Jensen Beach Boys Wrestling Captures Fifth at State Championships

UPDATE: The Jensen Beach High School boys wrestling team has just secured fifth place at the Class 2A IBT state championships, showcasing remarkable resilience despite the absence of their star athlete. Competing at the Silver Spurs Arena on March 7, 2023, the Falcons amassed 77.5 points, finishing just 21.5 points behind fourth-place Charlotte and 11.5 points ahead of sixth-place North Fort Myers.

The team’s standout performance was led by freshman Kane Drake, who made an impressive debut by finishing as the runner-up in the 120-pound weight class. “I really had no clue I’d get this far,” Drake said following his inspiring journey through the tournament. His only setback came in the finals against Riverdale’s Eric Bush, where he suffered a third-round pin with just 1 minute and 28 seconds remaining.

Drake’s path to the finals included a dominant 21-8 majority decision over Lincoln junior Juan Torres and an 18-1 technical fall against East River senior Isaiah Rivera. He described his semifinal match against Gulf Breeze senior Garrett Ferguson as his favorite, winning with a controlling 6-1 decision. “It felt great to go out on the mat, go against those older guys and dominate. I felt proud of myself,” he expressed.

Despite losing four-time state champion Sebastian Degennaro to graduation, coach Tom McMath praised his team’s performance, likening it to last year’s sixth-place finish. “They balled out,” he stated, highlighting the spirit and hard work displayed over the three-day competition.

Jensen Beach’s other top finishers included Sair Lopez at 126 pounds, Tyson Reyes at 215 pounds, and Blake Elder at 285 pounds, each securing third place in their respective weight classes. Lopez concluded his freshman season with a 36-6 record, while Reyes finished his junior year at 26-2.

“This season is a grind sometimes, but we show up at this tournament. I’m just super proud, super grateful for our program and our kids,” McMath added, underscoring the team’s commitment and determination.

In a significant development for the area, Fort Pierce Central’s Skyler West also claimed a podium finish, placing fourth at the Class 3A state championships with an impressive 59-4 record.

As the Falcons celebrate this remarkable achievement, all eyes will now be on Kane Drake as he sets his sights on further success in the upcoming seasons. With a debut season record of 41-7, Drake’s passion for wrestling is evident. “I just love how hard wrestling is. It’s like no other sport,” he stated, revealing the mental challenge that fuels his dedication.
