John Carroll University secured a narrow victory against Oberlin College on February 24, 2024, triumphing 77-73 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) quarterfinals. The win, characterized by a last-minute three-pointer from Aidan Fitzgerald, propels the Blue Streaks into the semifinal round, underscoring the old adage of “survive and advance” in college basketball.
In a tense finish, Fitzgerald’s shot required extensive review before officials confirmed it counted. Initially, one official ruled the shot clock had expired, but after verification, it was concluded that time remained when Fitzgerald’s three-pointer found the net with just 36 seconds left on the clock. “They said the replay angles weren’t clear so they just went off the time on the clock,” commented Shiva Senthil, the head coach for Oberlin. His team had been leading by four points just minutes earlier and felt they could have extended that advantage.
Relief washed over Pete Moran, head coach of John Carroll, as the pivotal call went in their favor, effectively sealing the victory. “The whistle came after the shot was taken,” Moran explained. “Therefore, it was an inadvertent whistle but the shot was already taken.” Fitzgerald, who finished the game with five points, expressed his surprise during the review process, but was ultimately grateful for the outcome.
The Blue Streaks, now boasting a record of 20-6, will face DePauw University in the semifinals at Denison University on February 27 at 17:00 local time. To clinch an automatic spot in the NCAA Division III tournament, they will need to secure two more victories in the NCAC tournament.
Luke Chicone was instrumental for John Carroll, scoring 23 points, including 16 in the first half. His contributions were critical, especially as others stepped up during the tense second half. Fitzgerald’s three-pointer was crucial, but it was Brandon Rose who provided a decisive spark, scoring eight consecutive points during a critical three-minute stretch.
Oberlin, with a record of 13-13, fought back valiantly after trailing by nine points at halftime. They made an impressive 12 of 28 attempts from beyond the arc throughout the game, showcasing their resilience. JJ Gray led the Yeomen with 19 points, along with seven assists and three three-pointers, while Zach Smith contributed 16 points.
Moran acknowledged the challenge posed by Oberlin, stating, “Oberlin made some highly contested shots.” This victory not only moves John Carroll forward in the tournament but also adds to their storied history, as only 17 teams in the program’s 106-year existence have achieved 20 wins in a season. “These seniors have been part of three other 20-win seasons, and they just didn’t want their season to end,” Moran added.
With the stakes high and the momentum building, John Carroll looks to continue their quest for the NCAC title and a chance to compete on a national stage in the NCAA tournament.
