Judge Extends Block on National Guard Deployment in Chicago
UPDATE: A Chicago judge has just extended a block on the deployment of National Guard troops in the area, impacting plans until the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes. U.S. District Judge April Perry announced her decision on Wednesday, maintaining a temporary restraining order that prevents any troop movements in the city.
This ruling comes amidst escalating tensions as President Donald Trump pushes for military enforcement in Democratic-run cities, facing fierce opposition from local leaders. The implications of this decision are significant, with legal battles intensifying across the nation.
In related developments, deployment plans are also stalled in Portland, Oregon. A recent court ruling allows Trump to command 200 National Guard troops, yet a separate order blocks their immediate deployment. Judge Karin Immergut issued two restraining orders earlier this month, one specifically preventing the president from sending troops to Portland, and another overriding attempts to deploy California Guard members instead.
In California, legal battles continue as the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals hears arguments over Trump’s authority to deploy troops to Los Angeles. A district court previously found the administration in violation of federal law for military actions during protests against immigration policies. The appeals court has paused enforcement of a ruling that would return control of the California National Guard to state officials, leaving hundreds of troops in federal hands as the case unfolds.
Meanwhile, legal challenges are mounting to halt the deployment of over 300 West Virginia National Guard members to Washington, D.C. A state court is set to hear a lawsuit this Friday aimed at stopping the state’s involvement, while a federal court considers a request from D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb for a temporary injunction against the more than 2,200 troops currently in the capital.
As these legal disputes develop, the situation remains fluid. Local and state officials are watching closely, as the outcomes could affect troop deployments in multiple cities across the United States. The urgency of these matters is underscored by the potential for significant repercussions on both the military and local governance.
