BREAKING: A federal judge has jailed 27-year-old Maurice Herron after he allegedly concealed a loaded pistol inside the back of an Orinda police car, where it went unnoticed for over a week. U.S. Magistrate Judge Kandis Westmore ordered Herron’s detention following significant evidence presented by federal prosecutors that contradicted his previous claims of rehabilitation.
In her detention order, issued last week, Judge Westmore checked 12 of the 20 criteria justifying pretrial detention, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against Herron. This development marks a significant turn from earlier this year when Herron was released from custody after convincing Westmore he was on a path to a better life.
However, the new evidence paints a different picture. Herron is currently facing two federal gun charges. One case involves his arrest in January 2025, and another from an incident in November 2024, during which he was apprehended by an Orinda officer. Court records reveal that while handcuffed in the police vehicle, Herron allegedly retrieved a gun from his waistband and stashed it on the floor of the patrol car.
The weapon remained undetected for eleven days until it was discovered by another officer, prompting an investigation that included reviewing video footage from the police car, which captured the entire incident.
In addition to the gun charges, Herron is implicated in a violent armed robbery in downtown Oakland. Prosecutors assert that he acted as the getaway driver in a robbery where one of the suspects, Roosevelt Jones, was killed. Another suspect, Jashawndre Uphsaw, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to that robbery.
Authorities stress the gravity of the situation, as Herron’s actions not only jeopardized public safety but also raised serious concerns about his intentions and behavior. The court’s decision to detain him reflects the increasing scrutiny on individuals with histories of gun violence.
As this case develops, legal experts and the community will be watching closely for further updates. Herron’s next hearing is anticipated, and the outcome could have lasting implications on his future and the ongoing fight against gun violence in the region.
Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent and developing story.
