UPDATE: The Kauai Police Department (KPD) has just recognized its exemplary employees for the months of October, November, and December 2025. During a recent Kauai Police Commission meeting in Lihue, officials celebrated the commitment and dedication of several officers and public safety workers who have made significant contributions to community safety.
Officer Kevin Kamakahi and Officer Branden Barroga were honored as Employees of the Month for October 2025 due to their outstanding investigative work. On August 1, Kamakahi responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in Lihue. Their swift action and thorough witness interviews led to the identification of a suspect and the recovery of the vehicle abandoned at the base of a 60-foot cliff. The following day, the duo, along with additional patrol officers, apprehended the suspect without incident, recovering a loaded firearm and illicit drugs in the process. Their proactive efforts not only resolved the case but also linked the suspect to multiple felony investigations, preventing further distribution of illegal substances in the community.
In November 2025, Public Safety Workers Ernest Ganiron and Ronald Aceret were recognized for their professionalism and compassionate service. Their dedication was highlighted when a member of the public credited them with helping him achieve sobriety and stable housing. This individual expressed gratitude for the critical support provided during a challenging period, showcasing the profound impact Ganiron and Aceret have on the lives of those they serve.
Officer Desmond Thain received the Employee of the Month award for December 2025. His investigative skills have proven invaluable, leading to the seizure of a vehicle containing a loaded firearm and drugs. Thain has also successfully resolved a complex credit card fraud case, resulting in an arrest. His commitment to roadway safety is evident, with over 20 arrests for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence recorded this year alone. Last year, he was honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Hawaii Department of Transportation for his efforts in reducing drunk driving incidents.
KPD Chief Kalani Ke expressed immense pride in his officers, stating, “These recognitions reflect the kind of work our employees do every day. Often serving in challenging circumstances, much of the work they do goes unseen. I am incredibly proud of their dedication and say mahalo to the families whose support makes their service to our community possible.”
