Local Owners Transform Southwest Louisiana Retail Landscape Amid Challenges

UPDATE: Local entrepreneurs are redefining community retail in Southwest Louisiana, bringing personal connections back to shopping in a time of convenience-driven commerce. Mia Mouton-René, owner of Mia’s boutique in Lake Charles, and Brittany DeRouen, owner of Sway Boutique & Gifts in Moss Bluff, are leading this charge.

Just announced: Mouton-René will expand her influence by opening a second location in the Prien Lake Mall next week, increasing her staff from 5 to 8 employees. “I want to reach a crowd that I’ve not reached and better serve my customers,” she stated. This expansion comes just four years after she pivoted from photography to retail following the devastating impact of Hurricane Laura in 2020, which destroyed her photography studio.

In a world where online shopping dominates, both women emphasize the importance of local engagement. Mouton-René reflects, “Every time a customer walks in, I’m like, ‘Wow.’ These customers at any point could choose a big box store, but they choose us.” Each purchase supports local families and contributes to community resources, like public parks and libraries.

Meanwhile, DeRouen took over Sway in 2019, just before the pandemic forced lockdowns. “We created a car-hop service during COVID, bringing the store to our customers,” she explained. This innovative approach allowed her to thrive when many retailers struggled. DeRouen’s commitment to personalized shopping experiences resonates with customers: “I’m everyone’s personal shopper.”

Both boutiques reflect the resilience of the local economy, contributing approximately $2.4 million to the community by enabling jobs and supporting local initiatives. “When people shop local, it means I get to open tomorrow,” Mouton-René emphasized, highlighting the direct connection between purchases and community sustainability.

The emotional bonds formed in these shops extend beyond transactions. DeRouen noted, “We celebrate every day with people, build relationships, and you never know what someone’s going through.” Their shops become safe havens where customers can share joys and sorrows alike.

As they expand, both women remain committed to their roots. “I’m never leaving downtown. My heart is here,” said Mouton-René, affirming her dedication to the community while aiming to enhance her service through diversification.

This urgent call to action encourages locals to support their neighborhood businesses. By choosing to shop at Mia’s or Sway, customers are not only purchasing unique items but also investing in the dreams of local entrepreneurs and the vitality of their community.

In these challenging times, the message is clear: local shopping is vital. “When you shop with us, you’re supporting dreams and families,” DeRouen stated passionately. Both boutiques exemplify how community spirit can thrive, fostering connections that online shopping simply cannot replicate.

Local residents are encouraged to visit these establishments, discover unique offerings, and witness firsthand the impact of their support on the community’s resilience.
