Mark Ruffalo Criticizes Trump at Golden Globes Over ICE Killing

During the Golden Globes ceremony held in Los Angeles, actor Mark Ruffalo publicly condemned the actions of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved in the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a mother of three. The incident has ignited significant controversy and debate over immigration practices in the United States.

Ruffalo, alongside fellow actress Wanda Sykes, donned pins stating “ICE out” and “be good,” directly referencing Good’s tragic death. Video footage from the incident shows Good driving her car in the direction of an ICE officer before he fired three shots, resulting in her death. Following the shooting, the officer reportedly used derogatory language to describe Good. The U.S. government has supported the officer’s actions, claiming he feared for his life, although the circumstances surrounding the shooting have raised serious questions.

“This is for Renee Nicole Good, who was murdered,” Ruffalo stated in an interview with USA Today. He further criticized former President Donald Trump, citing ongoing legal issues and questioning Trump’s morality. “We’re in the middle of a war with Venezuela that we illegally invaded,” he added, highlighting his belief that Trump’s administration disregarded international law.

In March 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse against writer E Jean Carroll, further complicating his public image. Ruffalo characterized Trump as the “worst human being,” expressing concern that the morality of such a figure is central to the leadership of the United States. “If we’re relying on this guy’s morality for the most powerful country in the world, then we’re all in a lot of trouble,” he emphasized.

Sykes also voiced her discontent, stating in an interview with Variety, “We need to speak up and shut this rogue government down. It’s awful what they are doing to people.” Their remarks reflect a broader sentiment among many artists and activists who are using their platforms to advocate for change.

Despite the backlash from some conservative commentators, many supporters praised Ruffalo’s bold statements. One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “Mark, thank you for saying what most of the world is also screaming,” a post that garnered over 2.5 million views.

The Golden Globes provided a significant platform for Ruffalo and Sykes to address pressing social issues, highlighting a growing trend where celebrities leverage their visibility to bring attention to critical matters. Their comments resonate with concerns regarding the treatment of individuals by government agencies and the broader implications of current immigration policies in the United States.
