BREAKING: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has just launched an online hiring portal as part of his transition team’s efforts to staff the new City Hall administration. This urgent move, announced on Thursday, allows potential candidates to submit their resumes and express their expertise in critical areas such as climate, housing, and education.
“As we begin the transition to a new era, this resume portal will allow us to roll up our sleeves, hit the ground running, and enact the agenda that got Zohran elected,” stated Elana Leopold, executive director of the transition team. Mamdani aims to form an administration capable of delivering on his affordability-focused platform, which resonated strongly with voters.
During a press conference on November 5, Mamdani emphasized his commitment to building a compassionate and capable City Hall. “We will form an administration that is capable and compassionate, driven by integrity, and willing to work just as hard as the millions of New Yorkers who call this city home,” he declared.
As he prepares for a city government that oversees more than 300,000 employees and manages a staggering $115 billion budget, Mamdani faces significant scrutiny due to his limited executive experience as a Queens Assembly member for the past four years. The online portal is seen as a vital first step in attracting fresh talent to the administration.
The hiring portal allows applicants to specify their skills in project management, policy-making, or communications, making the process more accessible for potential city workers. Grace Rauh, executive director of the good government group Citizens Union, praised the initiative on social media, describing it as a positive sign of Mamdani’s intent to invigorate city government with new talent.
Mamdani has already appointed five co-chairs to his transition team, including notable figures such as Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor under Mayor Eric Adams, and Lina Khan, former Federal Trade Commission chair. This diverse leadership group reflects Mamdani’s commitment to experienced governance.
While many top leadership roles remain unfilled, Mamdani has expressed his desire to retain current NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, although her intentions beyond December 31 remain uncertain.
Mamdani’s transition team is set to make headlines as he heads to the annual SOMOS conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, scheduled for Thursday evening. He is expected to arrive by 6 p.m. and will hold a press conference alongside New York State Attorney General Letitia James and District Council 37 President Henry Garrido.
As Mamdani embarks on this critical phase of his mayoral journey, the focus will be on how he fills key positions and implements his agenda for New York City. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
