Nahant Board Urgently Reviews Cell Tower Upgrade Safety Concerns

UPDATE: The Nahant Planning Board is urgently reviewing safety concerns regarding a proposed upgrade to the Crown Castle cell tower. During a critical meeting on Tuesday night, expert RF Engineer Michael Lawton from Isotrope LLC provided vital insights into potential health risks, including exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF).

The tower, situated in a residential neighborhood near the police station, has sparked significant alarm among local residents. Board member Rob Steinberg voiced concerns about the “potential alarm in the community,” emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues promptly.

Lawton confirmed that exposure risks exist, particularly if the tower undergoes renovations and adds new carriers. “If exposed, the risk is there,” he stated, underscoring the need for thorough evaluation. He mentioned that some municipalities have commissioned reports to calculate projected EMF exposure based on factors like antenna configuration and height.

The current setup includes three wireless carriers: T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Lawton explained that T-Mobile currently has two levels on the tower and noted that AT&T must conduct an exposure study if they seek to add a new carrier. This study would assess the cumulative impact of all three carriers.

In light of these developments, the Board is considering holding a public meeting to gather input from Nahant residents. Although no final decisions were made during the meeting, several members stressed the necessity of community engagement. Lawton suggested that a public hearing would provide an essential platform for residents to voice their concerns and receive information.

While Lawton expressed that he personally would not have concerns regarding the upgrade, he acknowledged the importance of transparency. “I think a public hearing might be a good opportunity to let people talk and listen as well,” he stated.

As the Nahant Planning Board continues to deliberate, the urgency of the situation cannot be understated. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in discussions regarding the cell tower upgrade, as the potential health implications may significantly impact the community.

Next Steps: The Board will likely announce a date for the public meeting soon, providing a crucial opportunity for residents to engage with officials and experts on this pressing issue. Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
