UPDATE: Renowned historical interpreter Nathan Richardson is set to bring the powerful legacy of Frederick Douglass to life next week in Hampton, Virginia. His workshop, titled “The Art of Historical Interpretation with Nathan Richardson,” kicks off at 6:30 PM on October 30, 2023, at the Hampton History Museum. This event promises to engage audiences eager to learn about historical interpretation and the impactful role of figures like Douglass in American history.
Richardson, a 22-year Army veteran from Maryland, has dedicated himself to portraying Douglass at over 65 performances annually, from classrooms to historical events across the nation. Clad in a traditional frock coat and armed with a replica of Lincoln’s cherished walking stick, Richardson transforms into Douglass, offering an immersive experience that goes beyond mere reenactment. “An interpreter literally has to become that person,” he emphasizes, highlighting the difference between interpretation and performance.
Attendees can expect an interactive experience, as Richardson concludes his presentations by allowing the audience to ask questions directly to Douglass. “An interpreter has to know everything,” he explains, providing precise answers about Douglass’s life, including his five children and their experiences.
The workshop aims to inspire a new generation of historical interpreters at a time when the profession is declining. “We need younger people who are interested in history to bring it to life,” Richardson urges, underlining the importance of preserving and sharing stories of historical figures who laid the foundation for civil rights in America.
This is a unique opportunity to gain insights from a seasoned interpreter who has dedicated over a decade to this craft. The workshop is free for museum members and just $5 for non-members. Don’t miss out on this chance to learn from a master storyteller and engage with history in a profound way.
