UPDATE: The Sacramento Chrysanthemum Society has just concluded its vibrant specialty chrysanthemum show, captivating attendees with stunning floral displays that are a testament to the artistry of horticulture. Just announced, this event has set a new standard for flower shows in the region, showcasing an impressive array of blooms that could transform any garden.
As a first-time judge in the Design Division, I, along with fellow enthusiasts, witnessed the breathtaking diversity of chrysanthemums. This year’s show featured varieties classified into 13 categories, including Irregular Incurves, Quills, Spiders, and Pompoms, each more exquisite than the last. The event, held in Sacramento, California, has inspired many to explore the world of chrysanthemums deeper than ever before.
Currently, I am the proud owner of eight potted “Non-Hardy” chrysanthemums, which I acquired during the show. My excitement is palpable as I prepare for the challenge of nurturing these delicate plants, known for their tall, spindly structure and vibrant blossoms. These specialty varieties stand at about 4 feet tall and demand meticulous care, which I am eager to provide.
The allure of these colorful blooms comes as many gardeners are transitioning their gardens for the fall. For years, I have cultivated hardy garden mums, reveling in the explosion of colors that brightens my garden beds as the nights grow longer. However, many gardeners dispose of their chrysanthemums after blooming, unaware that these resilient plants can return with renewed vigor in spring.
What’s Next: As I embark on this new gardening journey, I aim to replicate the stunning results seen at the show. These specialty chrysanthemums require careful pinching and pruning—a practice that leads to the formation of larger, more vibrant blooms. Will I be able to achieve the same level of beauty? Time will tell, but I am committed to nurturing my new plants alongside my reblooming irises.
Attending specialty flower shows not only enhances your gardening knowledge but also opens doors to a community of passionate horticulturists. I encourage everyone to witness the spectacular sights and learn more about the artistry behind these stunning flowers. The fall season is upon us, and now is the perfect time to get involved, either as a participant or an attendee.
As we look forward to next year’s show, I will document my progress with these new chrysanthemums and share tips for success. Wish me luck, and consider making a visit to a nearby flower show—it could inspire your own green-thumb endeavors!
